The earth, it is implied, will not remain forever. The judgment pre-figured by the flood, and delayed until God’s purposes are fulfilled, will eventually come, and when it does it will be so severe that nothing will remain. While the flood was on the earth for a full year, seedtime and harvest were interrupted, and other aspects of the normal operation of the earth. But after the flood they were restored, so here is God’s promise to unworthy mankind: that he will never again take away these good things while the earth continues. Christ points to the Father’s love for his enemies in the same terms: ‘for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust’ (Matthew 5:45).
