Now Noah began crop husbandry, and planted a vineyard. Maybe wine had been discovered, fermented, and used before this. Perhaps drunkenness contributed greatly to the violence of the earth just before the flood. But now Noah has cultivated a vineyard. ‘And he drank of the wine,’ and evidently, he liked it very much. And he drank and he drank, and he was drunken. And Noah, the godly Noah, representing the church, is found in a drunken stupor – what a tragedy. ‘And he was uncovered within his tent.’ He was naked, for what reason we do not know: perhaps his drunkenness, his dishevelled condition, the heat of the afternoon, but he was uncovered within his tent. So in his privacy, he had thrown aside his dignity, and he was in a stupor.
