Genesis 9:23

But Shem and Japheth do not have the same attitude. They ‘took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backwards, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.’ They are so careful; they are so respectful of Noah. They will avert their eyes away from their father’s shame. They will cover him, and not take advantage of this. Love hopes all things, and these two sons hoped for the recovery of their father to become once again the man of honour and dignity they had known before.
Application
The attitude of those who are justified is different from the unjustified towards those who fall. Ham was not a justified man. Those who have received forgiveness wish others to receive it. They know it is a matter of grace and that they did not deserve mercy, but having received something so precious, they want all men and women to receive it. But the unjustified are still comparing themselves with others, and therefore the failings of others are seen as to their advantage. Ham wanted justification for his own waywardness.
