The same words are repeated again, for Noah’s reassurance. Man must again bring forth abundantly in the earth, and this is exactly what has happened as travellers across the globe will testify.
How hard human beings find it to grasp the extent of God’s patience! How easy they find it to misinterpret this. It rises so much higher than human patience that their minds cannot take it in. God must have forgotten about his world, they conclude. Or he must be indifferent to what takes place here, or he lacks the ability to implement justice – the world has gone out of control and he cannot now stop it. Why else would he wait so long? Why else would he allow such atrocities to take place and not immediately intervene? But no, God has not forgotten project earth; he knows when he will judge; all things are written in his book and his book will be opened; Satan himself will be judged and sentenced, and no evil will be overlooked. But here God binds himself not to act precipitously. He has perfect control over his own feelings, and his wrath will not be released until the chosen hour. But then, it will be released with unstoppable force, and they will say, ‘Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?’ (Revelation 6:16-17).
