Haggai’s third and fourth prophecy are given on the same day, two months after the second. This third prophecy is very intriguing.
When Christ came into the world, he showed that he has an efficacy which contrasts entirely with that of the ceremonial temple. He made the unclean to be clean at a touch – ‘Behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed’ (Matthew 8:2-3). If Haggai’s question had been asked of Christ, the answer would need to be, ‘Yes, it shall be holy.’ But this is the efficacy of the new covenant, not the old covenant. Cleanness can only be obtained direct from God, by his forgiving love. A sincere repentance and a trust in the mercy and goodness of God secures cleansing. It cannot be obtained from articles in the temple. When Christ came into the world, any Jew who continued to cling to and to trust in the ceremonial forms of worship, had failed to understand this lesson.
