Comments
The reverse question is now asked by the prophet. Can you lose cleanness? Can an article lose its ceremonial cleansing? If the unclean touches the ceremonially clean, is the ceremonially clean made unclean? Yes, ‘it shall be unclean.’ That was the priests’ instinct based on the law, and it was correct. You can pollute, but you cannot obtain cleansing by anything in the temple. Cleansing only comes directly from God, from Christ. The unclean can impart uncleanness, but the ceremonially clean (and that was the highest form of cleanness that the ceremonial law offered) has no power to make other things clean. It is one-way traffic.
Application
There is an application of this principle to holiness. We obtain cleansing from the Lord, and we are clean in his sight. But we must never think that we who are clean, can take some unclean practice and because I am a Christian, it will be okay. It will not be okay. It will pollute us because the transmission only goes in one direction.
