The role of the angels is very different to that of the Son indicated in the previous verse. They have a serving role, a more lowly role, but nevertheless a glorious role. They are God’s servants dedicated to the task of serving the cause of the gospel and of those who are called to everlasting life. Their involvement in God’s plan is frequently described in the Bible. They watch with wonder God’s original work of creation, being themselves created before the physical world and called to be witnesses to the rest of God’s creative acts. It is through them that the law is given on Sinai. They witness and announce the birth of Christ, comfort him in Gethsemane and declare the marvellous good news of the resurrection. They assist and strengthen the people of God. They carry out God’s judgments on the wicked and they wage constant war against the demons over whom they will finally triumph. We could also trace the church in this chapter. We see God’s revelation to his people through the incarnation (verse 2), and the purging of our sins (verse 3). We see it in verse 8 in the kingdom of which there is a throne specifically mentioned, and we can see the care of Christ, even in the ministering angels. But it is Christ who we see most of all, in the three psalms quoted. They all about him: his wonder, his love, his majesty, and his kindness and familiarity with his people, resulting in their love for him and their choice of him.
