Continuing with the quotation from Psalm 45, the writer of Hebrews shows the character of the Son from what the Father says about him in words of praise and admiration. ‘Therefore God,’ – a reference clearly to the Father – ‘even thy God hath anointed thee.
True happiness only comes through knowing him, and trusting him, and having your soul in his hands. It comes through having assurance of salvation, and having the evidence of his work in your life, and the evidence of his work in answering your prayers, the evidence of his power which he somehow infuses into you – his warmth and peace and power – when you love him and obey him and serve him. Assurance comes to us by our noticing and rejoicing in the work within and answered prayer and help and strength. And it comes in a measure directly – if not all the time, very much of the time – when our hearts are seized with gladness and happiness in Christ. Christ is anointed to transmit on to his people this oil of joy and triumph and achievement.
