In contrast to the burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin of the old covenant this one sacrifice is effective. The old covenant offerings at best sanctified to the purifying of the flesh (9:13), but Christ’s offering up himself sanctifies us, body and soul. It sanctifies us permanently, entirely, and eternally. At conversion we are justified by faith and our record of sin before God is blotted out so that our sins are put as far from us as the east is from the west, and he remembers them no more. We are regraded from the perspective of heaven as without sin and possessing the perfect righteousness of Christ. From that time on, God is also progressively sanctifying us internally, so that we are being changed into the image of Christ in true holiness and righteousness. And at the resurrection we are raised with new glorified bodies. In every way we are sanctified, though there are different stages. All this is by the will of the Father, whose will Christ gladly obeyed. Again we see that the whole Godhead determined to give us the gift of salvation and it proceeds from the Father. Although Christ came into the world to make an atonement and satisfy the justice of God, our salvation was not a matter of the Son persuading the Father to do what he had not intended to do. It was the Father who designed the way of salvation and so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son.
