This is not just about reproving each other. In fact, that's about the last thing that the exhortation has in mind. The person who only wants to correct his fellow Christian has probably lost sight of the task of positively inspiring others. We are to stir one another up to love: love for lost souls, love for fellow believers – to generate enthusiasm for these things. This is about inciting one another, motivating one another, reminding each other of how pleasing this is to the Lord. So, we inspire each other to witness, we inspire each other to take account of others, we encourage each other in the Lord's work. We rejoice to see each other being used and blessed by the Lord. Paul rejoiced in the Philippians generosity to him in his work of the ministry, not because he sought their gift, but, as he says, ‘I seek the fruit that increases to your credit’ (Philippians 4:17). He did not cease to pray for the Colossians that they would ‘be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God’ (Colossians 1:9-10).
