The historians tell us that part of the culture was sometimes to round up people who were disapproved of, and parade them in the streets. Dispersed Christians from Jerusalem were particularly subject to this because they went to places and towns and areas where they did not belong, and they could easily be persecuted and taken advantage of by those who resented their presence there, especially as followers of Christ. Christians were people who were disapproved of by their own people.He gives the details of what had happened to them to show he is fully aware of the price they have already paid for their faith. Although this has nothing to do with how they were saved, it is a measure of how much the gospel meant to them at one time in their lives. Did they value it so highly in those days and yet now they are ready to turn away from it? He will not easily believe this of them. They stood their ground against persecution because of what they understood. The truth has not changed, so let them not change their assessment of it.They suffered personally, and they were not ashamed to identify with others who suffered in the same way. It is a shameful to have to suffer and to be exposed to public ridicule, but it is more shameful to deny Christ. We can bear such suffering at the hands of unbelievers because we know they are blind to the truth of God’s word. Their judgment of us is flawed and God’s truth will soon come to light, causing hem to be put to shame instead.
