Most expositors used to say that the coming referred to in this verse is the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D.
For New Testament believers these words apply to the end of life, or to the coming of Christ, whichever comes first. ‘For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and not tarry.’ We not only look back, but we look forward. We look back to our conversion and ask ourselves if we have lost our early commitment, and look forward to the coming of Christ. When we do this, all the energy, all the effort we put into living for the present life, all of our earthly concerns is shown for what it is. How irrelevant they will be when we die or when Christ comes. Thinking of these things wakes us up and restores all our commitment and our priorities for Christ.
