Jacob was near the end of life when this took place. Seventeen years before he had brought his entire family down to Egypt and been reunited with Joseph, and now Joseph hearing that his father was sick brought his two sons for Jacob to bless them before he died.
Ongoing faith once we are Christians involves actually putting into effect the commands of God in our lives, living holy lives and doing things God’s way. It is not just believing the Scripture, but obeying what we believe, and that is why these great men of the past, saints of the patriarchal age are brought to our attention. There are preachers who will uphold the authority and the infallibility of the Bible, and its absolute centrality in the life of the believer, but then they do as they like, and they do not actually obey it, even though they extol its virtues. They lift it up, but they are not saying, ‘What do the Scripture say on whether we should have all this entertainment and all these bands in our worship services. What about you and me in our lives? Do we honour the Scripture with our lips and say the instructions of the Bible are everything, and yet we help ourselves to many worldly things, and determine our careers by what pleases us, rather than the Lord? This is a great testimony of Jacob by the end of his life: he understood and he obeyed.
