The accomplishments of faith are many, but in every case faith rest on the integrity and reliability of the word of God. Moses received God’s instruction to do something which had never been done before, and which in itself was a symbol without power. It was hard to see how the daubing of the blood of the lamb on a household could protect the people within, nevertheless it was to be carried out precisely as God required, and the danger to the Egyptians who failed to do the same thing was certainly very real. Faith believes what God says and carries out his instructions diligently. Perhaps many Jewish families did not at first understand the significance of what they were told to do, but in the morning it was evident that only those houses which had had the blood painted on the lintel were protected, and as faith reflected on the events of that critical night, there were deeper lessons to learn. Christ is our Passover. He is the one who fulfils every detail of what Israel was told to do. He is the lamb without blemish and without sin, roasted in the fire of the wrath of God, eaten with the bitter herbs of repentance, his blood daubed on the doorposts of our hearts in recognition that only his sacrifice for sin can take away our guilt. He is the one of whom not a single bone was broken. His atoning death is all that the believer needs to escape the judgment of God.There are depths in the commandments of God which we do not fully enter into at first, but faith obeys carefully and trust that the Lord understands all things perfectly, that he is the perfect teacher in all he directs us to do, and that great blessing follows those who carry out his word. The first born of Israel lived, while the terrible cry that came from the households of the Egyptians gave the final impetus to the positive ejection of the children of Israel from the land. By faith the persistence and boldness of Moses was rewarded.
