When Israel turned, under the instruction of God, towards the Red Sea, they seemed to have allowed themselves to become trapped. That was certainly the conclusion of the Egyptians who, having changed their minds about letting them go, pursued them.
Death boxes in those without faith, leaving them no way of escape, but God’s people pass through the experience of death and for them it is the gateway to life. ‘If a man keep my saying,’ says Christ, ‘he shall never taste of death’ (John 8:52). For us, the sting of death is removed; for Christ, he drank that bitter cup. ‘So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ’ (1 Corinthians 15:54-57).
