‘Quenched the violence of fire’, that is Shadrach Meshach and Abednego, in Daniel chapter 3, and they were ready to die rather than engage in idolatry. That was the problem for them: they must become idolaters, or they must die, and they didn't know that God would deliver them through the fire.
People may say to us, ‘How are you going to win the lost? You have got to have a band. You have got to bring all the worldly music and the beat and the rhythm and so on. You have got to compromise or people will not come in’, but the Bible shuts us in to the preaching of the word of God and prayer. ‘That will never work’, they say. Obedience to the Lord, sticking to his blueprints and reliance on the Holy Spirit: that is what works in every revival that has ever taken place. Do you serve the young? Do you teach in Sunday School? Do you teach the youngsters in the weeknight meetings? That particularly can be exhausting and tiring: that is your ministry to young lives. The local authorities can do some good things: build skateboard parks, and create other facilities; I don't think any of us would wish to oppose anything like that, but that cannot help youngsters morally. We are not criticising it but that cannot help a rising generation. It is only Sunday Schools and youth weeknight meetings and the teaching of the Bible that can make any difference to large numbers of young people.
