Can we not bear something unpleasant in the short term when we know that it is doing us so much good in the long run? It is the immaturity of the child that is unable to see this sometimes. The Christian must not be like that but must gain perspective on the Christian life and what God is doing with him.
Peace, plenty, pleasure, honours, what effect do these things have on you? Well the natural effect is that you become secure and proud and satisfied and complacent and self-indulgent, and even covetous, and then you move from that into licentiousness and disobedience of other kinds. God’s training course will not let that happen, if you heed it, if you are on the books in the lectures, heed the training, value rebuke, have aims, value the standards. You will gain an altogether different form of peace, peace that comes with righteousness. My Father is at work in my life. Is it so with us? Listen to conscience, Scripture, exhortation, observe the examples, take the promises.
