When through Haggai, the coming of Christ was promised and the change of the old order and the bringing in of a completely new order, then it would be the last order upon earth: ‘yet once more’. From his perspective, there was only one more great change to come in the economy of God, and that was the coming of Christ ushering in the last age of the world. We live in this age when grace is proclaimed and Christ is seen in all his perfections, and we understand his work and how he accomplished salvation.The old order, ‘as of things that are made’, were physical symbols. They were made by the hands of men, skilled men, who worked under Moses to construct the tabernacle and all its furniture (Exodus 31) according to the pattern shown them by God so that the symbol did justice to the reality in heaven. But the things that man makes cannot last, and God never intended them to last. What is made with human hands is contrasted with what God constructs not made with hands (Hebrews 8:2; 9:11, 24). The shaking spoken of here is the shaking involved in removing the types and shadows and leaving the heavenly tabernacle in place which cannot be shaken. Even the sacrifices in the old tabernacle were not effective. They never cleansed the people from sin. It is what those sacrifices spoke of that cleansed from sin. They spoke of the one sacrifice for sin which God would provide. The physical symbols and laws which terrified were shaken and removed so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain because they are designed by God to last forever. The sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ will never lose its effectiveness. Those who are under it are saved for eternity. God will also bring in a ‘new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness’ (2 Peter 3:13), for this old cursed world is not fit to house the kingdom of God, but that must wait until all the elect are gathered out.
