This is the second item we have in this list of practical matters, which we are very forgetful about. Of course, in the case of those who are in bonds, there is an extra reason why we may forget them – out of sight, out of mind.
There is an example of this in Hebrews 10:33, ‘Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions: and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. For ye had compassion of me in my bonds.’ That is also our duty. There is a terrifying expression in the words of Amos the prophet: ‘Woe to them that are at ease in Zion’, and the great complaint of the Lord was that they were not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Woe, pronounces the Lord, upon privileged believers, who are not grieved at the circumstances and conditions of fellow believers. Be bound in daily prayer, bound as being yourselves also in the body. It helps; you can imagine their situation. Because you are in the body, don’t you hear the Lord saying in this third verse, ‘Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them: and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.’ It means, number one, you can imagine their plight easily, and number two, it means, you may be God’s instrument to help them, not only in prayer but in practical ways, because you are also in the body. Therefore, you are the ideal agent to send. What shall we do to help that person in a certain country? Oh, we know a pastor there, we can ask him to go? What will the Lord do to give comfort and consolation to one of his servants suffering on earth? He will use another of them, to give in a material way, or to go alongside.
