This is the fourth channel of love’s expression listed here. Literally the Greek reads, ‘Marriage, honourable in all’; the word ‘is’ is not present.
1 Corinthians 13 gives the perfect rules for marriage and should be read often in this light. We must pray for our marriages and strive to subdue the flesh. We need the patience, the kindness, the love, the humility, the appreciation and respect that Paul speaks of in that chapter, then marriage will be wonderful. Marriage is God’s unit for Christian service, for family, and for hospitality. The old Puritan commentators used to say, ‘Love is a choice’. Somebody says, ‘I do not love him anymore; I do not love her anymore’, but didn’t you know that love is a choice? You do not love, because you do not choose to love. Puritan sayings on the subject of marriage were highly instructive: ‘To love the body without loving the mind is to love a doll, a passing fancy without affection’; ‘When passing clouds arise, it is by love that they are dissolved’; ‘Out of this vast world God has determined us for each other’; ‘First you must choose your love, then you must love your choice’; ‘Look not for perfection in this life; that is reserved for another place’; ‘Never both get angry at the same time’; ‘If the highest currency is love, the second highest is trust’; ‘Never talk at each other’; ‘Always look for truth in a complaint’; ‘Physical beauty fades, but not so wisdom’; ‘It is a great blessing to have a faithful friend to whom you can open your heart and a very great blessing to have a friend who will stir you up in the ways of God’.
