In order to suffer for those many sons of man, the Lord Jesus had to take our nature and therefore he was made a little lower than the angels that he, by the grace of God, might taste death for every man. It is impossible for the Son of God to suffer in his divine nature because that nature is not capable of suffering, being forever perfect and blessed beyond measure.
Such an amazing step on the part of the Son of God as to voluntarily bring himself down to our level provokes deep questions. Why has he done such a thing? On the safe assumption that he does nothing without a purpose and that he cannot be mistaken, we are filled with joy and hope at the presence of our new elder Brother. He has come down to us not for his own sake but for ours. He has come to give us what was beyond our reach – reconciliation with God. He is so committed to us that he has taken our nature for ever.
