Moses was faithful in all God’s house we have already read in verse 2. In what capacity was he faithful? Not as one who is in charge, but as one who takes orders – as a trusted servant. This role he carried out honestly, diligently, commendably, but it was a relatively lowly role, and all the time there was above him the real owner of the house, the one who built it, and indeed who built all things. Furthermore, the things that were in place at the time when Moses served, were not themselves the ultimate objects of revelation, but were shadows of things to come. The ceremonial law and the worship ordained through Moses and the covenant of Sinai consisted of types and pictures of the reality that would come later when the Son of God came into the world. God taught Israel and indeed the whole world through those pictures which skilfully illustrated the person and work of Christ in shadowy form, so that those who were taught by the Spirit could have insight into spiritual things as they were expressed in concrete terms.
