Hebrews 4:9
Comments
The great conclusion is this: ‘There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.’ God be thanked that whereas national Israel was given an earthly land, something better is reserved for God’s true children. Salvation is expressed in terms of rest and the letter is about to go on to explain what that means. This kingdom, this rest where God the Father will be intimate with individuals, is still open. The promise is still running. The church is called the people of God, but it is no longer a single nation with physical borders. It is now a people from every land and nation on earth, defined by an invisible border that skirts around one and includes another. It is no longer a typical people blessed with physical earthly blessings, but a spiritual people every one of whom shall inherit the earth.
Application
Truly, in the kingdom of heaven, the best is reserved till last. We worship the Lord because he does not disappoint us or exhaust his blessing in earthly things which cannot last, but he makes our hearts to overflow with gratitude, and abundantly pours out his love on his beloved children to keep them always looking forward to greater blessings from his hand in the future.
