‘Who can have compassion’ – the word means he can deal gently; he can moderate or measure his passions. The high priest was able to have compassion because he shared a common ignorance and sinfulness, but Christ on the other hand is pure and holy and has compassion out of his mighty heart of mercy.
In all our sorrows and in all our trials, we can turn to one who knows all that we are going through. We turn to one who has a sympathetic heart. He is no less sympathetic than the high priests of old, even though he does not share our sin, for he has a far greater compassion than any fallen high priest can have because he has perfect love for us, and is committed to bring us to be with him in heaven for ever.
