The whole idea is to move on from these foundational truths. Not to leave them behind, but to add to them.
‘This will we do, if God permit.’ Why is that mentioned by the writer – ‘If God permit’? Well, God may not permit, God may not permit you to go on to maturity. He may leave you in spiritual immaturity. He may leave you as a relatively unproductive Christian, living only on the very fundamentals of salvation. He may leave you coming to church only once on the Lord's Day, even when you could come more often; never learning, never at Bible studies, never proving him, never serving him. H e may leave you as a very elementary Christian. Why would he do that? Why would God leave you undeveloped, immature, never advancing? Simply because you never asked him; you did not ask him to advance you. You clung to the world with one hand, he saved your soul, he made you anew, and you went on depending for your mood elevation, on the music of this world, that is, the sinful music of this world. There is better music, but you lift your mood with the tripe of the entertainment industry that is against God and his moral standards and you wallowed in that. You feathered your nest and concentrated on homebuilding and things for the here and now, with one hand you clung tenaciously to the world of material things. You never asked for God’s help to release your hold and to advance you, to teach and to deepen you, and to make you a true servant. God will help you advance, he will assist you but you must ask him and desire it, and strive to advance as he enables you so those are important words: ‘And this will we do if God permit.’
