Hebrews 7:17

To prove that Christ is made after the power of an endless life, he again quotes Psalm 110:4. This is the basis of his teaching that Christ is our great high priest, and according to David in that psalm, his priesthood is for ever, for it is after the order of Melchisedec. Unlike the Levitical priests, he did not succumb to death and have to be replaced. Though he did die, the outcome was the death of death, not the death of Christ, for he defeated death permanently so that when he rose from the dead, death no longer had any power over him. The endless life that was hidden in him during his days on earth prevailed over death itself, and so his dying was no disproof of his possessing an endless life.
Application
God’s people need a great high priest who is always active, always interceding for them, for we cannot live a moment without his priesthood in operation. We cannot for a moment take over from him and present ourselves as those who are acceptable to God. We need a high priest who does not need assistance from anyone outside himself, but who contains all power within himself to defeat every enemy that stands in the way of our life. The Lord Jesus Christ is the true high priest we need.
