The law had a deliberate weakness built into it, to teach the people that it was only an illustration and not the real thing, only a temporary institution of God for Israel, and not his permanent provision for the problem of sin. Something better must be looked for after it, something that actually accomplishes redemption and does not just symbolise it.
Religion is worth nothing if it does not remove these obstacles and bring us to know God. How many are content to go through their religious rituals and never ask any serious questions about whether they have peace with God? There is a laziness and a lack of urgency that allows them to be content with low-level consolations which may even be based on error. Our souls are not hungering for the truth of God as they should be. Without this, it is doubtful whether anyone will ever really find the Lord or have their sins taken away. Seeking and finding God must be the most urgent matter in our lives.
