Salvation was promised by God from soon after the fall, and he could not fail to deliver it. But in Old Testament times the pious said, ‘We trust in his mercy, but how will he bring about our redemption?’ They clung to the ordinances that God had delivered to their fathers, at the same time sensing that these things were weak and they waited eagerly for something better to be revealed.
As we consider these things, our confidence in God should increase more and more. We are not dealing with a man-made scheme, which inevitably contains flaws and inconsistencies which result from man’s limited ability to see the big picture and the fine detail at the same time. We are dealing with the mind of God which overlooks nothing, and is able to work good towards his people amidst the seeming chaos of this world. Who but the Lord can make all things work together for good to them that love God, while at the same time taking the wise in their craftiness? Who but the Lord can bring in a salvation which so thoroughly reverses all the damage done by the enemy of souls in spite of giving him a free hand to do his worst? Who but the Lord can take Christ from the descent he has made into the world and exalt him to receive a name which is above every name?
