By the same reckoning that makes the priesthood of Christ – given with a promise and an oath – superior to the Levitical priesthood, so too the associated covenant of grace is superior to the covenant on Sinai. This introduces the idea of covenant about which much more will be said in the following chapters.A surety is a person who agrees to take responsibility for the debt of another, if the debtor cannot pay. Somebody has an agreement, a loan, or they borrow something – yes, but the borrower may not be reliable. Will there be a surety, a guarantor, who will promise to repay, somebody who will repay the debt if the debtor cannot do so? A surety is needed for the arrangement, the covenant, to go ahead. Christ is the surety, the debt payer, on behalf of all those who are in the covenant of grace. He pays our debt for us because we certainly cannot pay. Sin, here, is seen as a debt and Christ went to Calvary and suffered the punishment of sin to pay the debt that we owe to God because of our sinfulness.
