In contrast to the constantly changing priests of the law of Moses, this man, Jesus Christ, continues forever. Psalm 110 testifies to the endless life that belongs to him and verses 16-17 of this chapter have looked at that. Here the writer shows us what that endless life tells us about the nature of his priesthood, and how essential it is. Death did not bring his priesthood to an end as it did for the sons of Aaron, for although he died to save sinners, he rose again from the dead and his priesthood was uninterrupted. He rose as one who had defeated death for himself and for his people. He has become the firstfruits of them that sleep (1 Corinthians15:20), and his resurrection is the guarantee of our resurrection. He was our high priest when he laid down his life, and he is our high priest when he takes it up again.

Application

God’s people have just one high priest to whom they entrust their souls forever. He knows every detail of their lives, and he is therefore able to make atonement for all their sins. As needy sinners we place our souls in the hands of our great high priest, and we need a high priest who has no weakness in him at all, but is mighty to save. Instead of death saying, ‘I have brought the ministry of your high priest to an end’, Christ says, ‘I have brought the reign of death to an end for all my people.’ Since the conquest of death was the principal part of the work he came to do, there could be no other outcome. He is our great high priest on earth while we fight the good fight of the faith, and he will be our high priest who receives us in heaven for ever.
