Hebrews 7:28

Those priests appointed under the law could not have remained in office forever. It would have been inappropriate for that to happen. They had to be time limited, because they were not fit to remain in place, and time needed to pass a verdict on them and say, these are not the real thing. But they were all that the law was capable of appointing: men with natural infirmity, with built-in shortcomings. Let them be hurried from the scene when Christ the true high priest appears, for they are not worthy to be compared with him, and there must be no possibility of misunderstanding by the people.After the giving of the law – and the timing is highly significant – came the prophecy of David about Melchisedec. What came later removes what came earlier, and the wording of the psalm shows that this replacement priesthood was permanent and was not itself going to be replaced in its turn. Why should what is perfect ever be replaced? By the oath of God, the Son is established for all eternity to be the high priest of God’s chosen people.
Application
He is our Saviour. What Levite was ever in a position like that? Here is the Levitical priesthood, with its splendour and its vestments, its liturgy, its rituals, and its dignity. But by contrast, Christ is so much greater, eternal, the King of righteousness and King of peace. You can see it all in this wonderful chapter. If you just read it through, especially in the King James Version, and you read it calmly and you bear these things in mind, then every time you read it you will see more clearly, something special about Christ, about our privileges, about his position in this great prophecy of David.
