Two further arguments are added to show the superiority of Melchisedec to Levi, and the superiority of his priesthood to the priesthood of Aaron. The first compares the mortality of the Levites with the immortality (in typical form) of Melchisedec.
Thank God that we have a high priest who is immortal, for the good things that we look to from our high priest are required by us today and tomorrow and as long as our souls shall live. Since we are never willing to relinquish life, we ever look to our perfect high priest to preserve our life. If he cannot preserve his own life, how is he going to preserve the lives of the people? What he does not do for himself he certainly will not do for others. But Christ has life, has earned life by his perfect obedience, and is entitled to life forever. We can have the utmost confidence in him, for nothing, not even the last enemy, death, can defeat him. Here is our assurance: that our high priest is invincible and has already defeated every enemy that would oppose our living for ever.
