God’s wonderful solution to this problem is to bring in a new covenant which is established on a completely different basis. It is a covenant of grace and not of works.
As a Christian you cannot plan to sin. ‘This afternoon I am going to do this or that wrong thing.’ The devil may tempt us and we may fall, but now, instead of sin being such an easy matter, there has to be a change in us. Things that delighted us before will not be the things we live for anymore.
The church is composed only of those who take the message seriously and want to belong to Christ. Obedience to God has been put in their minds. That is why we cannot baptise infants. We cannot say that in an infant there has been a conscious choice and faith. In the New Testament the heart of the converted person is seized by a desire to serve Christ. There is a great difference between the Old Testament order where you thought you were all right because you were born a Jew. In the New Testament church there must be a living relationship with God.
