Hebrews 9:23
Comments
Even the symbols of heavenly things, the patterns of the Old Testament worship, the tabernacle and its furnishings; even they had to be purified by blood. But the heavenly things themselves which they represented – communion with God, the salvation of souls, the possession of a place in heaven; these heavenly things themselves must be purged and purified with far better sacrifices than the blood of calves and of bulls and of goats. What power do the blood of calves and of goats have to cleanse us and make us fit to occupy the pure spiritual realm of heaven where God dwells? He will not on any account allow heaven to be polluted by any of the evil things that take place in the earth. ‘Thus saith the Lord GOD; No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel’ (Ezekiel 44:9). ‘And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein’ (Isaiah 35:8). ‘And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life’ (Revelation 21:27). ‘For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie’ (Revelation 22:15).
Application
What confusion it is to compare Christ’s offering up himself with any of the token offerings of the law? We ought rather to come to God with the deepest respect and fear in our hearts, and to fall at his feet in recognition that he was willing to do something for us which was so much beyond our understanding, but which was necessary to redeem us from hell.
