It was the Holy Spirit, who is the author of Scripture, who is said to have signified by this arrangement that access was not yet given to the holiest of all. This is fascinating, for the symbolism was designed to show how the holiest would one day be accessed, and at the same time it showed that that access was not yet granted.
True believers in Old Testament times could draw to God. He invited them to draw near in anticipation of what Christ would one day do. But much remained hidden from them and even the disciples were slow to understand what Christ had come to do. We who live in the church age have so much light from heaven. It is not because we naturally see things more clearly than those who went before us, but because we have been taught by God. We must thank him often for the great privilege we have to be living in the church age.
