‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.’ The two things are closely connected.
‘When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.’ God controls all the systems of the weather. He has designed systems which nurture all the multitude of creatures he has made. He is constantly at work in every corner of the earth, sending out lightnings and storms, which man still struggles to understand. Every man is brutish by comparison, and so too are the idols they manufacture. Every founder, every manufacturer of false gods, is confounded by his graven images; they are put to shame by the inadequacy of what they have made, and how far they fall short of true deity. They have made this dead god, and the very construction process tells them there is no life in it, and yet they prostrate themselves before it and worship it. How could they more clearly demonstrate their own foolishness? Even the manufacturers of these gods are as beset by tragedies as anyone else. We want to get people to see how little their philosophy helps them; it fails to make them better people; it fails to quieten the conscience, or to take away the fear of death, or to provide an eternal hope. They spend their lives placating them, buying them off.
