‘The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth’, or famine. It is God’s comment on the famine given through his prophets, reflecting on what it means for the nation, and particularly what they should read into it regarding the attitude to God towards them.
We may experience dearth in the soul, even as believers. We neglect prayer and the reading of Scripture, and we take no delight in God’s house, or in the fellowship of his people. God will dry up our souls and prevent us from finding satisfaction in any alternative to him. Depression may overtake us, and we lose all motivation in life. Our earthly goals seem no longer worth striving for, and we are left in a barren place.
