Jeremiah then emphasises how undeniable is Israel’s sin, how determined they are to sin, and how impossible it is to restrain them from sin. For its part Israel keeps up a steady refusal to accept God’s charges against it.
All this is true of man in general in the pursuit of his lusts. Here is a fearful picture of his determination to worship false gods, or gods of his own invention. Modern man’s gods do not consist of idols that he sets up before his eyes and falls down and worships, though that may still happen in some parts of the world. They consist rather of things that take the place of God, in that he goes to them for ultimate satisfaction, and for security and protection in life. He worships himself and his own achievements, and he places unlimited confidence in his ability to solve any problem that he meets with. He worships celebrities and people of fame, and he gives no thought at all to the God who made him and will call him to account at the end of life.
