Of Josiah it is written: ‘he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left’ (2 Kings 22:2); but of Jehoahaz it is written: ‘he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom’ (2 Kings 13:2). God knows how to protect his children and remove them from the trouble to come, and to hand those who sin against him over to punishment (2 Kings 22:20). In the case of Jeremiah, the Lord called him to live through part of the exile period, but he was kept in the midst of trouble (Jeremiah 40:4).
