‘The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.’ The miserable false prophets, let them dream their dreams – they are of no use to anyone.
What is the chaff compared to the wheat? The chaff must be separated from the wheat and discarded. That is the point of the winnowing process. There will be no great change in fortunes, among the generation where the chaff and the wheat are together. While the people who have the wheat love the chaff, they accommodate themselves to the chaff. When God’s word is published, the terms of the change in fortunes of the people of God will be that his word is allowed to have all its reproving, convicting fire. And further, God will not visit or raise up a new generation until there is this guarantee that they are people who will preach the word who will not accommodate themselves to error and to sin, those who will be plain and outspoken and declare the need for repentance to the people. And until that comes and it's absolutely plain, there can't be a new generation. You look at church history. You see a time of decadence, and then there comes a Whitfield or a Wesley. What's the difference between that generation and the slumbering church? The difference is manifest. The others are asleep; they are lacking in fervour; they are preaching peace; there's no effort to bring people under conviction of sin and there's great accommodation to people who hold error. When you get to your Wesleys and your Whitfields, you find a outspokenness and a great principle of separation adhered to, and that's the new generation that the Lord raises up.
