Here are the hard words that Jeremiah must speak to the people; here is the very real warning that he must give. Perhaps he would have liked to have stopped after the positive part of the message, but it all had to be delivered.
God is not afraid of any man. He is not afraid of the reaction of unbelievers to being told hard things. Sometimes we think that if we only say soft things to people then perhaps they can be won over; that if we say hard things, it may unnecessarily stir up resentment against God’s authority. There is this constant temptation in the soft hearted to soften the message. But God has hard things to say to people as well as encouraging things, and he knows the effect on the human heart of every part of his word.
