The Lord challenges the false prophets, and proposes a further test of their genuineness. There are two parts to this challenge.
How comforting it must have been to the godly in Jerusalem to know that such a terrible event as the destruction of the temple and the sacking of the city was the subject of prophecy of a true prophet of God. When it happened, although it was unthinkable to them, they could assure themselves that it was all within the sovereign purposes of God, and that nothing had happened to take God by surprise or derail his plan. God ordains some shocking things to the children of God – such as the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ – but nothing harms him, and even these terrible things work together for the good of his people.
