There has been rebellion, both in Babylon and among those left behind in Judah and Jerusalem. In Babylon the people are trying to convince themselves that the Lord has raised up prophets among them, and these are the prophets they want to hear, because they are telling the people not to settle in Babylon, and holding out hope of a return.
In recent years we have seen the great shattering of Rome. With all their moral problems. Then it has reached into the Protestant denominations. Did you ever think a time would come when an Archbishop of Canterbury would be a pathetic figure who would have to resign in disgrace, because of the failures and the contradictions and the nonsense in that national church? The trust of the people is non-existent. We are seeing people of whom we might have had cause to be afraid, because of their standing and their power years ago coming to nothing. Does it herald a time of restoration? Well, we lift up our heads and we pray. These things are written for our learning. ‘And I will persecute them with sword, famine, pestilence and deliver them to be removed to the kingdoms of the earth.’ Many will perish, many will be banished and driven away.
