A special warning is given to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, the leader of them all, an activist among the false prophets, and a man zealous for a bad cause. Nehelamite may refer to an unknown place, or its meaning ‘he of the dream’ may be significant.
How much trouble the ungodly produce among the people of God! Jeremiah was without fault in this matter, and had done nothing to deserve such an attack, but God willed that he should suffer in this way, to teach us that there are hard things to experience as well as blessings. Some of them come not as chastisements for sin, but because we are engaged in a battle with the powers of darkness in order to serve the Lord. Our words and our life stir up hatred from those who are opposed to our message.
