Now comes the content of the letter: ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; 5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.’ This was the problem.
Our situation today is closely parallel to that if Israel in Babylon. As Christians who are not of the world, we are commanded to live in the world and seek its peace, praying for rulers and governments (1 Timothy 2:1-2), submitting to the ruling authority to the extent that it does not command us directly to disobey God. Although we expect Christ to return, we are to work industriously (1 Thessalonians 4:11), and to participate in society as useful members (2 Thessalonians 3:10-11).
