These verses teach us the great pity God has for his people, pity that moves him to bring about their restoration. Ephraim, representing the ten northern tribes, had gone into exile at the time of the fall of Samaria, when the Assyrians who conquered them carried them away and brought people from other nations to live in their land.
This is the thing that will characterize the new generation, when God restores and renews his church. The new generation will be very conscious of the sins of the fathers. We are not called to despise the fathers. We are not called to despise the generation that brought evangelicalism down, but we are called, to recognize the sins, and the errors and omissions in a sober, clear-thinking manner, because they are not to be repeated.
