God had previously warned the nation that he would not spare them, and that even if they cried to him he would not listen to them and they would not be able to escape the evil he intended to bring upon them (Jeremiah 11:11; 14:12). But now it is very different.
It would never be right to speak like this, if doing so meant that they were blaming a previous generation, as if God was being unfair (Ezekiel 18). Each generation is judged for its own works and he never punishes one man for another man’s sin. But it is true that God may withdraw his restraint on the children of the wicked so that they are punished for what they in turn have done (Exodus 20:5).
