‘For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.’ Who is being told to sing? Is it Israel, or is it the surrounding nations? The command to sing is prophetic, and the passage is saying that there will be great cause to sing, because of the restoration of Israel and the great change in her circumstances.
‘They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.’ They will have an entirely new spirit. The people of God at times of restoration will be people who appreciate him, people who are aware of their sin, people who come the way of conviction, and repentance. Not like modern pop evangelism, which endeavours to cram people into the kingdom of God, on the basis of the feeblest of easy-believism and decision-based preaching. This will be real conversion, real repentance, that brings the people in in these days. All of this language is spiritual language and is descriptive of gospel blessings. The Lord will nurture his people and bring them safely over rough ground and provide rivers of relief for their refreshment.
