‘Prepare ye war against her.’ At last the enemy says, ‘Let's have these jewels and this finery, and all these things.
‘Woe unto us! for the day goeth away, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.’ It seems to be a picture of life. Here is the vulnerable society in which we live, and vulnerable individuals sinning away their years, the devil taking over ever increasingly. Yes, you may live a long life. You may live into your 80s, 90s, before the final attack comes, but you cannot avoid it. Night is the time of ignorance. In our time complete spiritual ignorance has overcome society, or the individual person, and she is at her weakest. ‘And let us destroy her palaces.’ Death falls. Of course, it first of all pictures the destruction of Jerusalem. But spiritually it pictures the destruction of everyone without Christ.
What is used against Jerusalem? Her own trees, if you please. That too is a picture of society, and of individuals. Our most precious gifts are used against our own spiritual interests. The devil infects us with unbelief and atheism, and how cleverly – with our great intellects! – we dismiss all thoughts of God and eternity, and our fruit trees, as it were, our own gifts, are used as the very weapons against our own interests, and the soul falls. The picture is amazing. What is your best gift? Is it a brilliant memory? It is it a mathematical brain, or a business brain? Whatever your skill is, the devil is using it against you. He is your attacker. If you are unconverted he makes you proud of your skills, and he will make sure that your life revolves round those skills, the things that are important to you. Your very skills and gifts will bring you down, because you will in effect make gods of them, and you will serve them. Instead of serving the Lord, you will be driven by these things. Then in the end, of course, they will speak against you, because they lead you away from God. You can see the interesting reasoning. We can use these kinds of arguments.
