But now Jeremiah changes tone; he does this constantly. The Jews are charged with blatant hypocrisy, but God has seen it all.
All that, of course, is represented in modern conduct, even among the religious. There is so much idolatry among people, which for us is really defined as seeking satisfaction in something which is not God, seeking fulfilment and pleasure and meeting all your needs and ambitions on earth rather than from God, and rejecting him as though he is inferior to everything that you can obtain on earth: the ultimate insult to God, the ultimate idolatry. But we too think we have got away with it. We too treat God as one who really knows only a part of what we do. We tell ourselves that there is a whole part of our lives that we can shut him out of and still be regarded as sincere worshippers. How can any such think that they will get to heaven? Let them take a much more radical and honest look at their conduct and their hearts.
